Feifengshan (Feifengshan Trail)

Feifengshan (Feifengshan Trail)Feifengshan, at an elevation of 423.5 meters, is Chiuchiungshan’s highest peak.

Feifengshan means”flying phoenix mountain”. This peak earned its name because of its shape, a phoenix with its wings down, as on descent. On Feifengshan are plum trees, azaleas and flame trees. The scenery changes according to the time of year. In this area are the Yunku Temple, Taichuan Temple, Kanying Bridge, Hsinfeng Pond, Lien Pond, etc. A trail passes through cool green forest-walk along it to escape the summer heat. On Feifengshan, the many flame trees bloom in summer, turning the whole area dark red.

        In winter, the plum blossoms turn this area snow white, making it one of the 8 most scenic spots in Hsinchu County. In the hills behind, the county government is developing trails for hiking and observing the scenery.

Wenlin Pavilion
Wenlin Pavilion
         Located in the Wenlin community of Chiunglin Village, the Wenlin Pavilion was built during the Ching Dynasty. It was a study center for people living in the Touchien River area at that time. Now, it has become a place to worship Confucius’. Every year, on September 28th,Confucius birthday, a ceremony is held to honor all teachers. This pavilion has remained active to this day, helping to organize cultural and art activities, to increase the cultural development of the area.

Neiwan Scenic Area

Neiwan Scenic AreaThe climate here is delightful, with mountains all around and the Yuluo River flowing through. The Neiwan fishing area is one of the 8 most scenic spots in Hsinchu. Inside this area are the Kuangchi Temple, a train station, a theater and suspension bridges that recall a bygone era.

The major recreational spot in the Neiwan Scenic Area is the Yuluo River. It is about 100 meters wide. From the road, you can see the broad river bed and the clear waters of the river, along with the surrounding forest. Across the river are 5 suspension bridges, for which this area is famous. Below the bridges, in the river’s shallow areas, you can catch shrimp, touch crabs or, where the water is deeper, go swimming. On the river banks, you can barbecue or camp. This is a great weekend or holiday getaway. To reach the Neiwan Scenic Area you can take a train along a small gauge railway, to relive the area”s past.

Wanjui Forest Recreational Area

Located over 38 hectares in Hengshan Village’s Tashanbeishan, the Wanjui Forest Recreational Area is full of natural beauty,including the Touchien River. This is Taiwan’s only combination virgin forest and amusementarea that is close to a city. From here, you can see all of Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County.There are a number of facilities including the newest in mechanical rides and entertainment.This is a paradise that is the combination of a resort, science park and natural ecosystem.

In this area are 115 cottages, in addition to a large conference hall, a large restaurant, campground and barbecue area, etc. It is very suitable for group visits, conferences or family vacations.

Chienshih Rock
Chienshih Rock is located on the bank of the Yuluo River. It is more than 50 meters in height and shaped like an index finger pointing toward the sky. According to the locals,long ago, Chienshih Rock reached the left bank and was onnected to another giant rock. But, a flood broke Chienshih Rock into two. The larger one is considered the male Chienshih Rock and the smaller one is considered the female Chienshih Rock. Below Chienshih Rock is a small temple to honor the spirit of this rock. Local residents come here to worship.

Tiehling Recreational Area
Tiehling Recreational Area

Tiehling is located in the Hsinle Tsun coal fields of Chienshih Village, below iaotsuishan. This basin of more than 30 hectares in area is surrounded by mountains on all four sides.The surrounding cliffs and river scenery are spectacular. Some years ago, this area served as an army parachute training base, to carry out mountain survival training and parachute training, etc. The Chienshih Village government office has developed Tiehling into a recreational area, and has built wooden tables, wooden chairs, and gazebos.

Yuanyangku Waterfalls

Yuanyangku WaterfallsSituated in Hsinle Tsun of Chienshih Village, this area is famous for the Chulien, Tsuiti, Huayen, Chientseng and Chitsai Waterfalls. It is a recreational area that combines waterfalls, forest and log paths.

The Yuanyang Waterfalls are about 30 meters in height. Their name, meaning male and female duck, came about because the waterfalls split into two where they meet a rock. From their highest point they come down the rock face in 3 levels. The mist from the waterfalls fills the river valley, creating an enchanting sight.

Chinping Hot Spring
Chinping Hot Spring

This hot spring area is on private property that has been developed for outside visitors. Facilities include a parking lot and a swimming pool, etc. There are large rocks spread out throughout the river valley. The waters of the river are clean and clear. In addition to enjoying the hot spring, you can catch shrimp or swim.

          After passing the large Chinping Bridge, you will see signs pointing toward a narrow mountain road. The first part of this path is paved, but later becomes gravel road, which is more suitable for 4 x 4 vehicles.

Tienjanku Farms

Tienjanku FarmsThese farms are located in the Naluo River Valley. Originally, this was a place for raising and breeding fish. But, in recent years, it has capitalized on the surrounding scenery to become a combination fish farm and river valley recreational area. Inside the farms are

two large waterfalls, with a height of about 30 meters. In addition, there is a path along the river that connects the two waterfalls and leads to a tea area, Echo Canyon, and Beautiful Woman Tree, etc. While here, make sure to enjoy a meal featuring fish raised at the farms.

 Chingwa (Frog) Rock
 Chingwa (Frog) Rock

Chingwa (Frog) Rock is located on the way from Chienshih to Yulao. In a river valley, you can see a frog-shaped rock rising from the river. Along the road, there is a round stone with the characters for Chingwa Rock carved on it. The “frog” is in the squatting position, with its eyes looking toward the mountaintop. According to legend, a large frog was hunting a pair of large mosquitoes. When they reached this place, the mosquitoes flew to the mountaintop. The frog, unable to climb the steep mountain, sat and stared at it. After hundreds of years, it finally turned to stone.

Naluowan Farms
Naluowan FarmsNaluowan Farms are located in Chinping Tsun of Chienshih Village . The scenery in this Atayal t r i b a l community is beautiful, and there are numerous farms.The homes of the Atayal are spread out among bamboo and fir forests, providing seclusion. Currently, this area is being planned as the Naluowan Recreational and Agricultural Area. In this area, visitors can enjoy the traditional food of the Atayal tribe, play in the water, etc. Completed facilities include observation towers, walking paths, etc.In addition, Naluo Park is nearing completion.

Litungshan Fort
Litungshan Fort

The Litungshan Fort is located on a plateau bordering Hsinchu County’s Chienshih Village and Taoyuan County’s Fuhsing Village.

To reach the fort, from Chutung head toward the mountains and pass Chienshih. After reaching Yulao, you will see a 3-way fork in the road. Take the road to the right and continue on it to the Litungshan community. Along the way, enjoy the quiet and scenic beauty. After a short time, you will see an old building that looks like a schoolhouse. That is the Litungshan community.

From the Litungshan community you can reach the Litungshan Fort along a mountain road that is cool, breezy and fragrant with the smell of grass and flowers. All that remains of the fort is the gate and four walls.From the fort you can see Hsuehshan, Tabahchienshan and Nanhutashan, etc.

Yulao Observation Tower
Yulao Observation TowerYulao is located at an elevation of 1450 meters. It is the boundary between Chienshih”s mountains. In Yulao are two observation towers for viewing the surrounding mountains. By looking to the east, you can see Yufeng Tsun on the valley floor, and in the distance,numerous peaks and ridges. By looking to the west, you will see the vast and gentle sloping Naluo River Valley. At night, the weather is cool, making this a great place for night views.

Malikuang Waterfalls
Malikuang Waterfalls

Situated where the Yufeng River meets the upper Shihlei River, the falls are about 30 meters in height. Where the mountain walls meet the forest, the water comes down in torrents, creating a beautiful sight. You can see a number of large and small waterfalls in this area. The sound of flowing water reverberates throughout the river valley. This is a secluded place to enjoy the mountains and to play in the water, as well as to observe the beautiful waterfalls.

 Chunchien Rock

Chunchien RockAbout 300 meters from the Hsiuluan community is a giant rock standing in the Tahan River Valley. It looks like a powerful and grand warship slowly entering a harbor.

From the Hsiuluan community heading toward Chunchien Rock, experience the natural beauty and sounds. From the suspension bridge, you can clearly see Chunchien Rock and the entire river valley.

Hsiuluan Hot Spring
Hsiuluan Hot Spring

Hsiuluan Hot Spring is located along the river behind Hsiuluan Elementary School, in front of Chunchien Rock. This is the confluence of the Tankechin River and Shakeyachen. The temperature of the hot spring is about 40 degrees Celsius. It is a carbonated spring, and can hold about 10 people. You can try going between the cold water of the river and the hot water of the spring, for a natural sauna experience. The beauty of this place is heightened when the leaves of the maple trees change color.

Szumakuszu Old Trail

Szumakuszu Old TrailThis entire 40 kilometer trail hugs the mountains. It passes dangerous cliffs, lush forest and undulating hills. This hiking trail is suitable for those who like excitement and adventure.

Szumakuszu Sacred Trees
Szumakuszu Sacred Trees

Szumakuszu is also called” the black” community. It is located in the cloud forest area in Taiwan”s northeastern corner, at an elevation of 1600 meters. Although the areas near the community have been developed, it is still a two hour walk to reach the old cypress forest. Residents of this community continue to discover more areas of red cypress forest. Among them, are trees that fall into Taiwan’s top ten largest. The largest tree in this forest iscalled the” big grandfather tree”.

This tree is unique in that it is in the shape of a human. It has a circumference of 20.5 meters, is about 2,500 years old,and reaches a height of 35 meters. It is the 4th largest sacred tree in Taiwan. Only Alishan’ Mienyueh Sacred Tree, the Central Cross Island Highway sacred tree and the tallest sacred tree in Taiwan, the Taan River Sacred Tree, are larger than the big grandfather tree of Szumakuszu. The discovery of the sacred trees has attracted many people to this area changing the quality of life in the zumakuszu community.

Chenhsipao Sacred Trees

Chenhsipao Sacred TreesChenhsipao is located at the starting point to Chienshih Village’s Hsiuluan Road.

It is an Atayal tribal village. From this village to the sacred trees, you will pass fields of peach trees that blossom in March or April,turning both sides of the road a beautiful pink.

The forest of Chenshipao Sacred Trees is Taiwan s largest virgin cypress forest. It covers an area of 50 square kilometers.Entering this area, you will come across one red cypress tree after another towering toward the sky. Most of the time the environment is damp, and the older trees are covered in moss, lichens and bracken. They can be found up to an elevation of 2375 meters. Deep in the forest is a small lake. The area surrounding the lake is often shrouded in fog, creating a feeling of mystery. There is no regular transportation to this area. So, visitors should provide for their own transportation and apply for an entry permit.

Yuanyang Lake Nature Preserve
Yuanyang Lake Nature Preserve

This lake is located along the Northern Cross Island Highway, at an elevation of 1670 meters. The lake is 575 meters wide. Water from this lake enters the Shihmen Reservoir. In this preserve are many species of wildlife, especially in the Yuanyang water activities area. It is necessary to apply for a permit before entering this area, so the virgin forest is well-preserved.
