Due to recent issues involving U.S. beef containing ractopamine, pig farmers from across Taiwan arrived at the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan to protest against beef imports from the United States. Protesters disagree that after the government imports ractopamine-included beef from the U.S., the pork that contain ractopamine will also be allowed to import with the government policy. This greatly concerns Taiwanese pig farmers that are fighting for survival in this industry. In the past month, the pork market has reached a low point due to the post-Chinese New Year and off-season period. Furthermore, due to the efficiency of the rotavirus vaccine, the survival rate has increased causing excess pork supply, unbalanced production and marketing, and declining pork prices. Pork farmers are suffering unspeakable misery. What's more, the National Animal Industry Foundation of the Council of Agriculture inspected ractopamine residue in pigs raised by some unworthy pig producers, which further resulted in a progressive decline in pork prices across Taiwan. The lowest price once fell to 50 NTD per kg. At that time, pork at the Hsinchu meat market was sold at only 52 NTD. After enforcing a series of control measures, prices have rebounded to 60 NTD. The Hsinchu meat market currently sells 850 pigs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 950 pigs on Mondays and Fridays, and 700 pigs on Saturdays with an average of 800 pigs sold per week. The Department of Education says that we have two kinds of compensations in the above compensatory plan, a "Free Tuition Compensation" and "the Additional Compensation for Children in low-income family". In the Free Tuition Compensation, the tuition fee for children who enter public kindergartens in Hsinchu County are free, and those who study in the government approved private kindergartens (including elementary schools) will receive NT$15,000 compensation per semester. Parents who have an annual income under NT$ 700,000 with 5-years-old children attending public or private kindergarten will receive an additional compensation, but will have underlying requirements. The application for the above free tuition compensation is asking the kindergartens your children is studying at to write a review for you and then apply it at the county government. By doing so, your children can attend public kindergartens for free. The government approved private kindergartens (including elementary schools) can receive the compensatory payment from the county government in two ways. One is deducting NT$ 15,000 from the tuition fee for 5-years-old children attending private kindergartens, and the county government will pay the amount back to the private kindergartens.
